Goldfish Care - FEEDING TIPS FOR YOUR GOLDFISH

Have you ever eaten the same set of meals for a number of consecutive days or even weeks? Don’t you just get tired of the same old routine of your meal plans and apparently lose the appetite to eat them? The same happens to your pet goldfish if you keep feeding it with only just fish flakes. It is a good goldfish care to, once in a while, let your pet explore different kinds of food.

Goldfishes are considered as omnivorous animals like us. Hence, they can eat both vegetables and meat. When do you think is the last time you fed your pet with foods like peas and shrimp? I have a few suggestions on what to add to your goldfish’s meal plan for a week or a day.

Aside from fish flakes, there are a number of foods you can feed to your pet like brine shrimp and daphnia. Brine shrimp is a good protein source for your fish while daphnia resolves the constipation problems that a goldfish often experience.

Vegetables leaves like fresh spinach and lettuce are also on the top recommends. These leaves somehow contain red and yellow plant pigments called carotenoids that are very helpful in enhancing the color of your goldfish.

Squashed peas may also become a favorite of your pet, without the outer skin since it is difficult for your fish to digest that part. Peas could help protect your goldfish from acquiring swim-bladder disease wherein its stomach distends and press against the swim bladder which is just beside it. It does its work by moving ingested foods and stacked up air in the fish’s stomach to lessen the pressure that the bladder feels as a consequence. The swim-bladder helps maintain balance on your fish and allows it to sink and float at the same time.

But before anything else, one must take note that to be able to feed your fish properly; the tank filter must be turned off. This will prevent your fish’s food from being filtered before your fish could actually eat it. Also, the frequency of feeding your pets with live food is equivalent to one to two fish flakes meal in a week. It is recommended to give goldfish some live food because it can greatly contribute for better digestion for your pet.

While feeding your goldfish, always remember the GOLDEN RULE: only give your pet a small amount of food once or twice a day. Goldfishes are known as greedy when it comes to feeding, they will eat anything you give them. You wouldn’t know when or not are you overfeeding them already, so it would be wise to just feed them with the right amount.  Plus, overfeeding your pet fish can make them ill faster rather than when you underfeed them.
